At the Hope Community Food Bank, pregnant volunteer Elena was sorting donations when pain hit. “I am not asking for much,” she whispered. “I just need 5 minutes.”
Manager Patricia Brooks cut her off. “This is a liability issue,” she snapped. “She needs to leave immediately.”
Elena stood crying, holding her stomach. Then kitchen lead Rosa stepped forward. “I am a witness to what just happened and I will not stay silent,” she said.
Rosa was the founder’s sister. By 5pm, Patricia was fired for violating the food bank’s core value: dignity first.
Elena gave birth that night to a healthy girl. She’s now the food bank’s Director of Volunteer Care. Her first rule: “Everyone gets 5 minutes.”
5 minutes of compassion. That’s all it takes.
