The Empty Plate That Taught a Lesson
Sarah had lost her job a week ago and was down to her last few dollars. She managed to scrape together enough food for her two young sons, but there was nothing left for her. As the boys ate, her youngest noticed her empty plate and asked why she wasn’t eating. “I already ate a big meal at work, sweetie,” she lied, forcing a smile while crying inside. Her 8-year-old son, Leo, didn’t say anything, but he saw right through the lie. He quietly slid his plate over to his mother and refused to eat until she took half. The next morning, Leo took a small wagon around the neighborhood, doing chores for neighbors to earn money. By evening, he came home with a grocery bag full of food he bought himself, handing it to his mother and saying, “Now we eat together, Mommy.”
