Few stories defy logic and stir the soul quite like that of Martin Pistorius—a boy who vanished into silence for over a decade, only to return, fully conscious and aware, from what the world thought was an irreversible coma.
In January 1988, 12-year-old Martin came home from school with nothing more than a sore throat. What followed was a medical nightmare. Within days, his body began to fail—his muscles wasted away, his limbs contorted, and soon, he slipped into a vegetative state. Doctors diagnosed him with cryptococcal meningitis and tuberculosis of the brain, but couldn’t explain why he continued to decline. After a year with no improvement, they gave his parents a devastating message: “He has the brain function of a three-month-old baby. There’s nothing more we can do. Take him home and care for him until he dies.”
But Martin didn’t die—and his parents refused to abandon him. Day after day, his father, Rodney, rose at dawn to dress him, take him to a care center, and later feed and bathe him at home. Night after night, alarms rang every two hours so Martin could be repositioned to prevent bedsores. Through it all, his parents clung to hope.
Then something miraculous happened. Martin’s mind began to reawaken.
Though trapped in a motionless body, he became aware—completely conscious—but unable to communicate. He described the experience as being buried alive: “I was aware of everything, but I couldn’t control anything.” People spoke over him, around him, never to him. Even his mother, in a moment of anguish, whispered to his still body, “I hope you die.” And he heard it. Years later, Joan admitted the guilt she carried, explaining, “I just wanted some relief. I didn’t believe he was still in there.”
For years, Martin endured in silence. He tried to numb himself to the pain and loneliness, mentally retreating into himself. But everything changed when an observant aromatherapist, Virna van der Walt, noticed tiny signs—subtle eye movements, faint smiles—and convinced the family to seek a new evaluation.
Tests at the University of Pretoria revealed the unthinkable: Martin was fully aware. His parents provided him with a computer and specialized software that allowed him to communicate, type, and eventually speak through a synthetic voice, similar to Stephen Hawking’s. The journey to regain his life was long, but Martin pushed forward.
In 2003, he secured his first job at a health center. Every experience was new and vivid. He recalled with wonder seeing a man with rainbow-colored hair, tasting cotton candy for the first time, and shopping for Christmas presents for the people who had nearly forgotten he existed.
Martin learned web design, graduated from university, and, in 2008, met Joanna—the woman who would become his wife. Joanna wasn’t deterred by his past or his challenges. “People say I’m his carer, but I’m not. I’m his wife,” she said proudly. “He teaches me something every day.”
In December 2008, Martin proposed in a hot-air balloon. They married six months later, building a quiet, joy-filled life together in England, where Martin now works as a web designer.
At their wedding, the words of scripture captured his journey best: “Faith, hope, and love abide… but the greatest of these is love.” Martin smiled and said, “My life has been defined by all three. Love carried me through as a son and brother, and now it lifts me every day as a husband.”
